Handling Voice: The Part Everyone Gets Wrong
Most travel eSIMs are data-only. They have no phone number, or a number you'll never share. Your voice identity stays on the anchor line — and the trick is keeping that line reachable without paying roaming rates.
Wi-Fi Calling is the mechanism. Enable it on the anchor line before you leave home; many carriers require you to be on the home network to complete the initial provisioning, including an emergency address registration. Once active, inbound calls to your home number ring over any Wi-Fi connection at no charge on most US, UK, and Canadian carriers.
For inbound SMS on the anchor line while abroad, behavior varies. Receiving SMS while roaming is free on nearly all carriers — it's sending and data that cost. So leaving the anchor line active with data roaming off means 2FA codes still arrive, which is the entire point of Layer One.
One caveat that catches business travelers: some carriers' Wi-Fi Calling implementations drop when the line isn't set as the data line. If your inbound calls stop working, check whether your carrier requires the line to have an active data connection. The fix is usually enabling Wi-Fi Calling before changing the data-line assignment, not after.

Trip: New York → Lisbon (6 nights) → Bangkok (12 nights) → home.
Before departure, at home:

Common Failure Modes
- iMessage silently re-registers to the travel eSIM's number (or to nothing) after a data-line change. Verify under Send & Receive.
- WhatsApp stays tied to your anchor number regardless of which line carries data — this is correct behavior and doesn't need fixing.
- Profiles that expire while inactive. Many eSIM validity windows start at purchase or first activation, not first use. Read which.
- Carrier-locked devices may refuse third-party eSIM installation. Locked handsets from US carriers are the usual culprit; unlock before you travel, not at the gate.
